What is an autotransformer and how does it work?
Depending on the application and when galvanic separation between primary and secondary is not required, a transformer with common primary and secondary, a so-called autotransformer, can be used. The difference between the highest and lowest voltage determines the dimensions and weight of the autotransformer.
The turnover factor is an important characteristic to consider when choosing a transformer type. For small turnovers, an autotransformer works well, while a full transformer is usually a better choice when the turnover becomes larger.
Common applications of autotransformers are in speed control of fan motors and voltage adaptation for motor drives.
